Grades 9–12. The First and Second Laws of Thermodynamics Kit introduces students to the first and second laws of thermodynamics by exploring the relationships between internal energy, heat transfer, mechanical work, and entropy. The experiments can be performed:

  • As an interactive demonstration
  • As group-led experiments in teams of 3 to 4 with guided inquiry, or
  • By sharing pre-collected data and encouraging students to perform additional data analysis

Progressing through a series of trials, students modify experimental parameters, adjusting controls to test specific variables such as mass, initial temperatures, and ambient conditions. Analyzing data trends, students systematically characterize factors affecting heat transfer and determine how to increase energy transfer efficiency. By studying these relationships, students can trace the footsteps of prominent 19th-century engineers and scientists who applied the laws of thermodynamics to develop steam engines, railroads, and locomotives. Multiple experiments are conducted where small student groups can collect data using analog thermometers or optionally with automated probeware (e.g., temperature sensors). Employing guided inquiry, teachers can lead students to design their own experiments.

The kit activities build toward the following Disciplinary Core Idea within the Next Generation Science Standards*: Conservation of Energy and Energy Transfer, HS.PS3.B. Combine this lab with investigations into heat and energy, thermodynamics, and gas laws for a series of lessons addressing the nature and properties of matter. Kit includes FREE 1-year access to digital resources that support 3-dimensional instruction for NGSS and sufficient materials for a single-station demonstration for small and large classes.
