Overview

Owl pellets are masses of undigested parts of food that owl species occasionally regurgitate. The contents of the owl pellet depends on its diet, but can include the exoskeletons of insects, indigestible plant matter, bones, fur, feathers, bills, claws, and teeth.

  • Our individually wrapped pellets are heat sterilized at 250°F for 4 hours and cooled in the oven and are free of chemicals.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Small but worth the price I ordered 28 pellets for a dissection lab for high school seniors. Each pellet came individually-wrapped and most were not completely dried out. Since these are small pellets, most of the contents are ribs, smaller leg pieces, and other detritus. However, only a few pellets were total duds (no skull or large bones) and a few pellets had multiple skull and jaw fragments. If you want to save a few bucks go for the small pellet. As an aside, the bone identification tool that goes along with this lab needs more specificity to be useful for higher-level labs.

The students love this activity, and talk about what they learned from it for the rest of the school year.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great hands on learning! Our first grade used this as a culminating activity to one of our reading domains. We talked about the importance of food, shelter, and water. This was a great hands on activity for the children to see an owl's adaptation to digestion. We ordered the small owl pellets. I didn't realize they were much smaller than I had initially thought. We had a couple of pellets that had minimal bones and had to use another pellet to provide the full experience. I realize the company doesn't know what is in each pellet and some had many more bones than others. I recommend purchasing the larger pellet size, but I would definitely order owl pellets again.
